Reading workshop is a time when children get to read! Usually, we start this block with a read aloud, followed by a discussion and a mini lesson. Each child will have a personal book bag to keep his/her chosen books in. We encourage choosing a variety of books to keep interest high. Initially, we will start with a five minute independent reading block (hopefully) and gradually increase the independent reading time as children are capable of handling the independence.
PLEASE READ ALOUD TO/WITH YOUR CHILD FOR 15-20 MINUTES A NIGHT. THIS IS THE BEST GIFT THAT YOU CAN GIVE YOUR KINDERGARTNER:)
Just Right Books
The children are excited about books and learning to read. At this time, reading to your child is the most important activity for reading readiness. However, your emergent reader will need opportunities to read independently at a 'just right' level. We will be teaching the children...
THE GOLDILOCKS RULE:
TOO EASY:
Every word is easy to read. I can read the whole story quickly and easily.
TOO HARD:
Many words are hard to read. I need lots of help reading this book. I can't remember important details of the story.
JUST RIGHT:
I can read most of the words of the book by myself. I only need a little help reading this book.
