LOOK!
Really??? Less than twenty days left to kindergarten??? Say it isn't so:( Now that we are winding down, there is even MORE time to sit and chat with the kids or just simply observe them. Boy, are they great. As a parent, and a teacher, this is hard to do. There is always something else that needs to be done and our monkey minds are always trying to get ahead of the game. And because of that we are missing the most beautiful time with our children. If we just stop, listen and breathe, and let them be who they are, the magic shines through. When we were in Wyman Woods on Friday we trampled through the woods and there was the chatter of many happy kindergartners overshadowing the sounds of nature. Don't get me wrong...it was wonderful to hear them exclaim with delight over the slightest thing...ie...an ant on a tree! (K is great!)...but then we stopped for a minute in total kindergarten silence and what we saw, felt and heard just touched the soul. Just by stopping and listening, we got a deeper experience and understanding of the woods. Sometimes, all you have to do is stop, listen and look.
Sing, sing a song.
Just about every day we are practicing for our upcoming Poetry Show (June 16 @8:30). The kids are doing a great job memorizing so many poems...much, much better than I can do! The best part is when they are ALL singing out loud at the tops of their voices...there are a few very proud ones just belting it out and not so on tune! Of course, I am right there with them:) Boy do I cringe when I hear myself recorded...YIKES! We get so caught up and lost in the moment! Anyway, the point of all of this is that it was a great moment(s) with us all just singing and dancing. We must never forget to sing...even if it is just inside our own heads.
"Sing out loud. Sing out strong. Sing of good things not bad. Sing of happy not sad...etc."
"Sing out loud. Sing out strong. Sing of good things not bad. Sing of happy not sad...etc."
Moments
One of the best things about being a kindergartner is that you pretty much DO live in the moment. Yes, they talk about what they did over the weekend or the day before and will project into the future about big things (going out to lunch with nana or a playdate), but mostly...they just are in the here and now. I loved this week when Mrs. Carroll started to cry over a book about a hurt puppy. Someone said, "You just need to stop and take a breath, Mrs. Carroll." Politely...'pull yourself together'. Don't project past or future. When I was out last week, I came back to a desk full of goodies...love notes, an unwrapped Oreo, a piece of chocolate and a rock. Life is good. You may laugh at the 'rock', but it was a special rock, one discovered, examined and deemed worthy of giving to the teacher. I still have it. Now that spring is here, these little munchkins are starting to burst and bloom. "It's beautiful outside!" "No hats and gloves!" For the most part, each time a new topic is presented, we are greeted with cheers! Seriously! Do you do that at work??? Usually, we are all about the free time. Don't get me wrong, Kindergarten 121 LOVES free time and recess...but their rapt expressions as I discuss spaghetti and meatball spacing is to die for! Today, enjoy the moment...even if it is only one:)
'splain yourself
Seems like it's been a week of explaining. The thing with kindergartners...they are open to everything. They are pretty much blank slates waiting to be written on. I brag that the Cat in the Hat and I are the same age (58)...use to be great til I started getting older. But, what the heck...I'm old to ALL five year olds anyway. I was really feeling my age this week when I had to describe a telephone that hangs on the wall and has a cord that only lets you go so far. That was bad enough...then I read "The Lorax", the kids were horrified at the greediness of manufacturers AND the pollution from these companies. Made me stop and think...this was MY world growing up and we never questioned it. I have come to the conclusion that reading makes you more informed but also causes MORE confusion. Our chapter book is "Ramona the Brave". I figured we were all set and that the book will be totally innocent (I admit I haven't read this in about 50 years!) Anyway...I DID have to edit it as I read...I think the word was 'stupid'...totally PC back then but not so much now. Ok...we got through that. Next, we get to chapter two - Mrs. Quimby Has a Secret - and we discussed what the secret could be, based on the fact that she put a dress on to run her errand, instead of wearing her raggedy clothes. When I asked "What do you think Mrs. Quimby's secret is?" They immediately came to the conclusion that she was divorced and had a date that she didn't want her daughters to know about. Pretty much had ME scrambling for a come back. Truth was, Mrs. Quimby had a job interview. The kids were disappointed, but could relate to that. The times...they are a changing'...
Eight Tens Plus Ten Eights
Whew! 100. Matteo had to make his own shirt...we are into three digits and no athlete has a number that big! That's a big number when you are only five. Quote of the day by a former student..."We only have 10 more 8s to go." I love how little kids have such a different perspective on things! Adults would say 8 more 10s. What a fun day it was with the high school captains and the bubble man. It was eleven o'clock before we even started to work! It is amazing how much work we do in a day, and yet I am always thinking of what we need to do and what we forgot to do. In the end...it truly all comes out in the wash. They are learning at an amazing rate and everybody gets where they need to be...eventually! I am always talking about being in the moment and living it to the max, no matter what it is. Then we get to the 100th day and it's like, whoa...we only have 10 more 8s to get this stuff into them:) Can't wait for each and every one of those. We have tons of singing, dancing, cutting, gluing, writing and reading to do. And let's not forget the giggles, hugs and smiles. It will be a grand finish! But...I think I will just look forward to tomorrow, which in fact is 10 tens plus one AND a palindrome...101.
The Magic School Bus!
We arrived at the PEM via 'The Magic School Bus'. Why? Because as soon as we got off and started walking, one little cherub piped up with, "We're here! We are in China!" Not quite...:) How cute was that? We were there for a bit over an hour and how in the world can one possible cram in a whole culture to understanding???? Impossible you say??? Maybe...but these little kindergartners gave it their all. Ask them to tell you two things that were the same as us and two things that were different. I think you will be surprised at the responses. One thing that is great about being a teacher of young children, is that you get so many 'wow' experiences! There are so many things that are brand new and never imagined before. It keeps us excited about life and the adventures of every day living. Sooooo...maybe we didn't actually make it to China...but the reactions would have been pretty much the same. The kids did say..."Too bad Ms. Perroni couldn't really take us to China." That my dear friends would have been a trip of a lifetime! Check out PEM this Saturday, February 13 10-4 for the family program celebrating the Year of the Monkey.
GUNG HAY FAT CHOY!
I just LOVE the Chinese symbol of red...happiness! Even if you find yourself drawn to blacks and grays, you can't help but notice when there is red around. It just pops out, makes your heart skip half a beat and makes your step a bit lighter. We had fun celebrating Chinese New Year with our Drion Dance - we made it just past the next classroom before we fell apart - and our fancy table setting for lunch. I could not begin to describe the various adaptations of chopstick maneuvering! Some gave up right away and some plugged along...but they all tried!
The day reminded me so much of what kindergarten is all about...lots of color, smiles, singing, dancing and trying our best. Today, we celebrated with the Chinese culture, all about honoring, letting go and looking forward. Last week, we celebrated the 90th day (Half Year) of kindergarten. It was a new beginning, also a time to honor, let go and look forward. Each day in Room 121, we honor who we are, we let go of our failures and celebrate our successes. Each day is a chance to 'do it over'. We tell the kids that 'kindergarten is all about trying and making mistakes'. Whatever went wrong yesterday, or last week, or years ago...maybe it can be let go and a new beginning can take place:)

Just breathe!
Here we are...just taking a breather! It is hard to get the whole ball of kindergarten energy to just STOP and let go...but we try. As you can see...we did! As a teacher, even in kindergarten, I feel the pressure to teach, teach, teach! As I am teaching, I continually think about what to teach next, whether today, tomorrow or next week! Stop and think...all we do is THINK! Don't you just love the quiet at the end of the day when the kids are all tucked in and peace reigns? What we are trying to do here, is teach the kids how to grasp onto that little moment of peace and quiet. To KNOW what it feels like to just BE! Just take a break from the hectic-ness of the world and their own little minds. You would be surprised, but at the age of 5/6 there are signs of anxiety. This week, I actually had a moment of being overwhelmed (mostly because it was paperwork and meetings) and Mrs. Carroll said, "Just take a breath." It helped:) It's all good...just take a breath.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Here we go...again:) January in kindergarten is a very exciting time of the year. After four months, we are ready for the big time! We are ready to give these little Ks a little more room to fly. I have spent the last few days reviewing where we are as individuals as well as a whole community and trying to determine where we are going next. There IS so much to do, to teach and to learn. The craft of teaching is to figure out the balance between work and play, push and support, encourage and pushing. As I get ready for the first day back, I KNOW that there is so much to do...but...I can't wait to see all these little ones and to spend some time just chatting and listening to all they have to share. My goal for 2016...be in the moment as much as possible and to keep the balance!
There's MAGIC in the air...
The magic of kindergarten happens every day in every way...we just have to take the time to stop and watch:) This morning we had a guest reader and for once I was totally caught up and on schedule so I could mostly sit and listen and watch. NOT something that happens often as Mrs. Carroll and I are usually juggling at least eight things at once! She's awesome at it...me???...I am the 'here and there' type. Just ask the kids!!! Long story short...I was watching their little faces as Mrs. Hallisey read "Olive, the Other Reindeer". Those fresh, sparkly, expectant faces were just enthralled and completely engrossed in the story. Their eyes sparkled, and the smiles and giggles were infections. What a gift! After the read aloud we did some dancing and singing to the "Gummy Bear Song" and "Boom Chicka Boom". They were each just so happy singing and dancing with all their hearts. How lucky are we to get to experience this EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Really...they just are so full of life and joy over the littlest things. I can't even begin to describe the screaming, running mob in search of the gingerbread man!!!! Ahhhh...
60 and counting!!!
Yikes! We are one third done!!! I simply cannot believe how quickly the time is passing. Each month goes faster and faster...but...maybe that is due to my age! How are things going? Fan.tas.tic! WE ARE FAMILY!!!! As we wind down the first tri of the year, we truly are a kindergarten family having morphed from a kindergarten community. As teachers, it is a constant battle of control. Part of it is the excitement of the holidays that is definitely in the air. And...I may be wrong...but I think we have had more than our share of full moons so far!
This is the singing and dancing class! They are just little sponges soaking up everything we put in front of them. Letters - check! Sounds - check! Sight words - check! Once we get into the new year, I expect an explosion of learning to take place. We have just established the very first 'Independent Kindergarten Art Gallery'. How fun was that??? We just let them go...being kids...letting them create...and voila! Their own art work is on the hallway wall! Authentic and NOT teacher directed. Although, I did insist on trimming the pages of the raggedy edges and then mounting the papers. We DID want it to look KINDERGARTEN professional:) Oh...and we did have to put the kaibosh on actually selling and collecting money for said art work:) We have some future entrepreneurs in our midst. The best part...was just to let them go. Let them be kids and just have fun. There was plenty of learning going on, too. You should have heard them when they came in and saw their gallery! Check it out when you come for conferences. Oh...and this was a free choice, so don't feel bad if your child did not contribute. Maybe he/she will in the future...or maybe not. But this little kindergarten family is celebrating each other and that's what it's all about:)

THANKS!!! GIVING!!!!
Once you start to make a list of what you are thankful for, it is hard to stop. There are so many little (and big) things. Me???? I am ever thankful for the gift of being a kindergarten teacher. Don't get me wrong...it CAN be exhausting at times, but it is such a rush...every minute, every day. I am so very thankful for the hugs, the smiles and the silliness that is the core of kindergarten. Each and every day, those children come skipping down the hall ready for whatever life has to deal out to them. If your could only see the effort that goes into making their letters correctly or even trying to color between the lines. It is quite humbling to stop and take a breath and just watch these little guys pour their hearts and souls into just being in kindergarten. They work hard and they play hard. Me? I just have to steer them in a certain direction and let them go...with a little direction. It is wonderful to be surrounded by happy, positive, open hearted, little ones eveery day. If you get a chance, just sit and watch, listen and savor the life of a kindergartner!
Halloween Musings
11/1/15
Ahhh...the holiday is over...whew. Sooooo...not my favorite holiday, ever since I was a kid. Makes no sense as I am especially a fan of chocoolate - dark of course:) Anyway, I try, as often as I can to take the perspective of others, and so I looked at Halloween through the eyes and hearts of the children. (It's the best part of teaching kindergarten!) I'm thinking that it's pretty darn good to be five years old and dress up as whatever you want. It's mega pretend! The kicker is that even though they know it's pretend, it feels pretty darn real. The angel becomes a devil, the Incedible Hulk reborn, a plethora of princesses and of course, let's not forget Star Wars:) Ahhh...the days of innocence...when the world is wide open and the possibilities are endless. Can you remember the feeling? So while Halloween is full of craziness like knocking on doors and begging for candy, it's also a night when the inner child comes alive and the whole night is spent in the world of imagination. It IS great for kids...big and small...but, I sure am glad it only comes once a year!

"Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart." Walt Whitman
These kindergartners fill the breathings of my heart by just showing up at the door! After being away from them for a week, I was just thrilled to see them all skipping down the hallway. We DID have to have whispery Wednesday as my ears are still ringing! My heart breathings expand every time one of these sweeties accomplishes the littlest thing...mastering scissors, writing 'a', finding a word, helping a friend. The breathings that go on I. Kindergarten are simply endless! I could fill a page a day. One of the best things about being a kindergartner is the wild anticipation of each and every day. This holds true for the kindergarten teacher. Our minds are going a mile a minute, just like theirs. How to stretch their minds and thinking.?How to open up the world to them? How to spark a love of life long learning when each and every task is a challenge? How to hold on and let go at the same time?
The breathings and the heart go totally hand in hand in Room 121. Somethimes we breathe deep and long to just slow down the living of tthe heart! You can actually FEEL the pulse of life as you walk into our classroom. We ARE living it out loud!

Today started the token reward program at the Glover. A whole class can earn a token or one student can earn one for the entire class. We earnesd three today! Although, I don't know why I say, 'we' since I don't have much to do with it. Grafton was a good friend to a kindergartner from another class during recess. Great job, Grafton! The other two were for walking in the hallway quietly. Isn't it amazing that one silly token can hold so much power? You should see the cooperation I get when I give out ONE sticker! But...it got me thinking...there are two ways to change a child's behavior - either positively or negatively. As an adult, I sure do respond better to at the very least - constructive criticism. Aaaannnddd, I am truly still a five year old at heart. I watched how proud they all were and pumped up when they earned a token. How quick us adults all are to correct a child, more often than not in a manner that could have been improved on. Of course, our hearts are always in the right place...there is just so much to teach them! How 'bout we just take a breath the next time our little ones 'mess up' and do what is right...the right way:)

Where does the time go? We are oh, so, very busy! I love this quote...there is so much to teach these little kindergartners...
The key to teaching is taking the child where he/she is at and encouraging each individual to grow from that point. Already, we have some readers and some not so much readers. As Pete the Cat would say..."It's all good!" There is no need to get upset or cry...we just keep on going on. Pete is a great role model for kindergartners that can start to feel the pressure already. They each KNOW who is good at what and our job as adults is to say, "It's all good!" In the end...EVERYONE learns to read, write and do math. Our goal, at the beginning of the year is to make each little cherub feel good about his/her self. We want to build confidence and give them strength to go ahead and take a chance. Mistakes are what kindergarten is all about and what a gift it is!!! It is amazing what they already know and yet...we just keep expecting more! Each child has the power to 'learn it' when given the tools. And in the end..."There's no place like home!"

It's been just great! I don't know about your kiddos...but the teachers are pooped! In just three days so much has happened. Every single day your child has been working hard. Play can be just as hard, if not harder than academics. Although we started with reading, writing, math and phonics and can get a quick understanding of each child's capabilities, it is so much more about the whole child. It is amazing to watch little personalities begin to peek through even though most don't know the others' names! Some are quick to give an answer or dance a bit while others are a little laid back and more observant at this point. Quite the gamut was displayed when we sang and danced to 'Mother Gooney Bird'. Some threw themselves right into the moves - or at least attempted them, while others were more of a 'are ya kidding me'?? Kindergartners are already quick to help each other out or to speak up for a minor injustice. All is good in the world of 121 and it shows!

And a week is done! It was just the first day of kindergarten and now the first week is over! Granted it was only two school days...but a week is a week and your child is officially a kindergartner! What a difference a day makes! They just came right in and got to work. You probably think we must be doing papers all day...but we just need to start things out calmly...before we let the party begin.
So these little kindergartners are just all that. They learned so very much about the nuts and bolts of kindergarten in a very short amount of time. Don't get me wrong, they are still confused with were to put things: cubby, locker, finished work, folder. I feel for each of you. Yesterday, you brought your baby to school for kindergarten and today the road is paved ahead. They are truly on their way. Are you wondering what their experiences will be, who the friends of today as well as the future will be and maybe what they will grow up to be? I am sure that many of you may have had a tear or two in your eyes. I hate to say it, but it doesn't get much easier. Mrs. Carroll and I will tell you college is the same exact feeling! Let's admit it - your baby is your baby - FOREVER! Well, I for one can tell you, YA DONE GOOD! All these little people are happy, hard working and open to learning. We are in for quite a ride!

Aaaannnnddd...DONE! We ALL survived the first day of kindergarten! WOOHOO! Everyone was fine. Everyone was happy. We made it until after recess and snack before we got the first, 'Now can we go home?'. Quote of the day...
"Wow! You knew that? You are pretty smart."
"I know. And I just got here!"
The worst thing about teaching kindergarten is Day 1... We have soooooo many rules! And there aren't that many at all, but when it is your first day of the big time, there is so much to learn!
Don't forget to raise your hand.
This is how you line up.
Don't forget to wash your hands.
You have to put your name on your paper so we know it is yours.
When we ring the chime it is time to freeze.
Please push your chairs in.
And that is just the beginning! Luckily, everyone left with a smile!
Being a new kindergartner is hard work! You are in a new school with new people. You are 'on' all day! It is almost like visiting a foreign country. It's hard to even know what questions to ask because there are TOO MANY!

'Twas the night before kindergarten...are emotions a little high??? Perhaps they are a bit low??? I guess it all depends one's perspective. As a kindergarten teacher, I also experience a myriad of emotions and my thoughts are flying all over the place. Am I ready? Did I do everything I needed to before the doors open? Will I wake up at 2AM making a list in my head and checking it twice??? Maybe yes, maybe no...
Not to worry...everything that needs to be done, has been done. Yes, all the supplies have been purchased and the classroom is cleaned and set up. Lunches have been made and clothes laid out in anticipation of the morning rush filled with excitement and a tad of chaos. But, that, as all encopassing as it seems, is all just the icing on the cake. We all can prep ourselves and those little ones, but the year ahead is a mystery. I can promise this...your child will learn, grow, laugh, make friends and struggle a bit with some aspect of kindergarten life. But, know this...your child will be loved. Here's to a wonderful year full of life in Kindergarten 121! Thank you for entrusting your child into the care of Mrs. Carroll and myself!sleep tight!!!!!
